How to avoid overpacking

Packing

At some point, every one of us has packed a little too much for holidays. 6 pairs of shoes, 5 pants and more than 10 tops? Yeah, that's how I used to pack. We all want to rock our holiday pictures with amazing and flawless outfits but guess what. You can still look flawless without packing tons of extra things you might not even use. I ended up using just 3 pairs of shoes instead of 6. And let me tell you, I wish I had known before because my suitcase was so heavy and bulky, I couldn't even carry it. Just carrying it from my hotel room to the lobby seemed to be the most killing workout ever. Here are some tips to avoid overpacking, so that you don't make the same mistakes I did.

Choose the right size of suitcases

Everything starts there. If you choose the biggest suitcase you have, you'll end up packing more and more things, because if you're anything like me, you'll be thinking: There's still some space, I can still fit my 4 pants, 10 shirts and a pair of shoes I might not use! So do yourself a favour and start packing in the carry-on, if space isn't enough, unpack and pack again but think twice about what you're packing this time. And if space is still not enough, choose a bigger suitcase.

Make a checklist

Right before you start packing, make a checklist of all the things you'll actually need. If you skip this step you'll be more likely to pack more stuff and there's a chance you'll forget something. So make a checklist.

Mix & Match

10 pieces of clothing can make tons of outfits! But the secret is to choose neutrals and items of clothing that will look good with whatever you're planning to wear. Try to make all of the clothing you're packing to match. You'll able to make tons of cute outfits with less clothing and that's a win win. Another tip is to pack more tops than bottoms. If you change pants but wear the same shirt, chances are, it will look almost the same, but if you change your top and not the bottom, Damn girl! You have a new outfit! Always remember to think twice when you're packing something. Ask yourself if you're really going to using it. And if the answer is "I might…" then you're not going to use it. There are shops there too, so, if you really need something you can buy it there as well. Plus, it is an excuse to treat yo self!

Do Laundry

You can actually do laundry wherever you are! Just because you're in another place that's not home doesn't mean you can't do laundry, so don't pack tons of extra clothing just because you are afraid your clothing is going to get dirty. You are going to be able to do laundry.

Go easy with shoes

Just take 3 pairs of shoes, 1 pair of sandals, 1 pair of comfortable shoes for walking and 1 pair of boots or winter shoes. You can add a pair of high heels if you think it's necessary.

Makeup & Toiletries

I am a makeup junkie, I just love it and can't live without it, so when it comes to travelling I tend to pack my 2 highlight palettes, my foundations, concealer, 4 eyeshadow palettes and 10 lipsticks. But that's not all, don't forget about primer, setting sprays, creams and more. And guess what? Bringing all of this stuff = a bulky and super heavy purse. So here's a tip to all the girls like me: Bring just what's necessary. When you're travelling, you don't always have enough time to get ready in the morning, so there is a chance you won't use all of your makeup. So just bring what is necessary and try to bring the travel size version. Maybe this is kind of difficult with makeup but it's easy to find the travel versions of deodorant, makeup wipes, sunscreen and more. Don't forget to check if your hotel provides shampoo, conditioner and soap. Most hotels do.

Rolling method

This method makes everything fit in your bag. Literally EVERYTHING! You just have to roll your clothes and place them in your suitcase.

Luggage Scale

This is something worth investing for. It is a huge life saviour. Depending on the airline you'll be able to bring a specific amount of bags and each bag can weigh up to a specific amount. You may want to check if your suitcases are below the weight limit before heading to the airport. If your bag is over the weight limit you'll have to make magic and put maybe more clothes on and you'll have to figure out how to make the extra weight in your bags disappear.

Wear the bulky and heavy items when travelling

By this I mean you should wear the heavy or bulky clothes on the plane if they a) Don't fit in your bag or b) You've already reached your bags weight limit but you're dying to take that special piece of clothing. The solution is to wear it! Tons of times I wore a lot of clothes on the airplane, it kinda looked like I was doing the 100 clothing layer challenge, but it worked! I didn't have to pay for my bags overweight, which can be super expensive depending on the airline. This is super useful not only when you're about to start a trip but when you're coming back home and you bought lots of things and they don't fit any more in your suitcases.

Hope these tips help you avoid over packing and making those bags super heavy! If there is another tip you have, why don't share it? Leave a comment below! And don't forget to pin or share this with your friends or family!

  • Jen At Dapperhouse

This is such a common issue for many people. I simply got tired of wasting so much time waiting at baggage claim so I quickly learned how to pack everything I need in a carry on! I use a lot of the strategies you suggested like the rolling method, using pieces that go together and wearing the same couple of shoes instead of bringing a bunch.

  • The rolling method looks like the best idea ever! I am terrible at packing, terrible, I’m always worried that I am going to forget something so I pack EVERYTHING just in case!

  • Lulubel Mari

I always made the mistake to bring 50 pairs of shoes, needless to say I end up wearing always the same one. I will keep your rule in mind next time ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Gayathri

This is probably written for people like me. I am the queen of over packing. I can’t leave anything to uncertainity so I end up making sure I HAVE EVERYTHING with me, esp those I would never use. Better safe than sorry, right? WRONG!

Isn’t’ it amazing how much rolling vs. folding makes a difference. I’m not an over packer except for shoes.

  • David Elliott

These are great reminders for when you are taking a trip. I agree that having the right sized suitcase is so important. You have to know how much you need and how many clothes and have the space to pack effectively.
